Lihue
While Kauai’s best sights are found away from the island’s commercial center of Lihue, it is a central hub for those traveling to Kauai as it is home to the main airport, Kauai’s largest seaport and the only mall on the island with major stores. Located on the southeast part of the island, it’s only about a six minute drive from the airport down Ahukini road to downtown Lihue.
The town is also home to Kauai’s county administration building, Kukui Grove Center shopping center, and several car dealerships. This is the first town most travelers encounter upon arrival and is a great place to stock up on groceries and other necessities before heading out to the beaches or other scenic spots. This is also a good spot to grab some local Kauai beer!
East Side (Coconut Coast)
Kauai’s East Side, often called the Coconut Coast because of its groves of palm trees, is full of fun and adventure. Explore historic places and amazing beaches and discover the Wailua River, Fern Grotto and Opaekaa Falls in this region steeped in Hawaiian culture and tradition.
Enjoy a walk through the charming coastal town of Kapa’a or stroll the Coconut Marketplace, where local artisans showcase their craft. Shops here feature everything from ancient Hawaiian souvenirs to upscale clothing stores.
The East Side also offers a wide variety of accommodations from high-end resorts to cost-efficient hotels and vacation rentals, all with classic Hawaiian small-town charm. It’s also home to a number of shopping and dining options, including the Kauai Agricultural Museum and many other attractions.
North Shore
The North Shore’s spectacular beauty, fabulous surfing, and laid-back lifestyle attract permanent residents and vacationers alike. This area includes world-class surf breaks like Sunset and Pipeline, and the iconic town of Haleiwa with its art galleries and surfing shops.
Homes on the North Shore tend to be larger and more luxurious than those on other parts of Oahu, with some soaring to an acre or more of beachfront. Some neighborhoods like Kawailoa have quiet, pristine beaches with lush white sand. Others, like Mokuleia, feature a mix of quaint beach cottages and sprawling estate lots.
A hike along a forested ridge trail leads to the peaceful 15-ft Laie Falls, or you can spend a day at the Polynesian Cultural Center to learn about Hawaiian history and culture. The North Shore is roughly an hour’s drive from Honolulu via two highways or Kamehameha Highway through central Oahu.
South Shore
